The Moon Was the Best, by Charlotte Zolotow and Tana Hoban; Greenwillow/Morrow, $15.
What is it about Paris that lodges in the memory bank reserved for special places? In the new picture book The Moon Was the Best, veteran children's authors Charlotte Zolotow and Tana Hoban, who contributes the photographs, figure it's the simple things _ the play of light off the skyline and the River Seine, the jostle of bread sticks on the way from the baker, the green parks and the colorful flowers in shop windows and on the streets. This is what one little girl _ too young to accompany her parents to Paris _ hears upon their return. She also learns about the Parisian moon, the most special part of all, her mother recalls. We won't reveal why, but it's just the right ending.
