Martina Navratilova said she will ignore an on-court security measure at the Eastbourne women's grass-court tournament that has players sitting facing the fans.
Eastbourne officials, in response to the stabbing of Monica Seles by a fan in Hamburg, repositioned the chairs so the players can watch the crowd during changeovers. Players usually have their backs to the crowd.
"I will flip my chair to face the court. I always face that way and I am not changing now," said the top seed, whose first-round match against Romanian qualifier Ruxander Dragomir was one of 30 rained out.
Gabriela Sabatini beat Pascal Paradis-Mangon 6-3, 6-2, and fourth-seeded Helena Sukova overpowered Linda Harvey-Wild 6-1, 6-2.
