Record number of players selected in amateur draft

Baseball's 1993 amateur draft resulted in a record 1,720 players being selected, 45 percent from high school, 35 percent from colleges and 19 percent from junior colleges, with 11 players from other categories.

The teams selected 614 right-handed pitchers, 36 percent, and 199 left-handers (12 percent). There were 341 outfielders picked (20 percent), 297 infielders (17 percent), 199 catchers (11 percent) and 183 first baseman (5 percent).

There were 354 players selected from California (21 percent) followed by 204 from Florida (12 percent) and 64 from Texas (4 percent).

The Seattle Mariners selected shortstop Alex Rodriguez out of Miami Westminster Christian with the first selection in the draft.

The draft was held June 3-5.
