Yankees: The Rev. Jesse Jackson said Saturday's planned protest at Yankee Stadium over minority hiring probably will be called because owner George Steinbrenner met Tuesday with several black leaders. Jackson, who didn't attend the discussion, called Tuesday's meeting a "breakthrough" because Steinbrenner released data on the number of minority members in his organization, while other baseball owners have refused to meet to discuss minority hiring.

"The other owners have conspired to avoid an affirmative action plan," Jackson said. "They want to offer it on their own timetable. The fact is, affirmative action is the law and they cannot live outside the law."

Royals: Reliever Rusty Meacham was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a sore right elbow. Pitcher Frank DiPino was called up from Triple-A Omaha.

Mariners: Edgar Martinez was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a pulled left hamstring. Martinez missed the first 39 games after pulling the hamstring April 3. Pitcher Jim Converse and second baseman Bret Boone were called up from Triple-A Calgary.
