Lt. Gov. Buddy MacKay says he doesn't have the inside scoop on whether Gov. Lawton Chiles will run for re-election.
But he thinks Chiles will run.
"Lawton's here, he's probably gonna run. I assume that," MacKay said Tuesday after a seminar for state employees on government reform.
Questions about Chiles' plans came up after MacKay spoke at the seminar, and he joked about whether he and Chiles _ who have focused on reorganizing and decentralizing state government _ would be around after all the reforms are in place.
Was MacKay implying that Chiles wasn't going to run for reelection?
No, MacKay said. Chiles hasn't told him what he'll do.
But MacKay knows what he'll do. If Chiles doesn't run, MacKay was asked, will you?
"Absolutely, God willing," MacKay answered.
