Northeast now 25-0 as tourney opens

Hilt Tatum, Spencer Hutchins and Doug Waechter hit consecutive doubles in the first inning to spark Northeast past Azalea 10-2 as Majors baseball action began Monday night in the Bill Lyons District 5 City Tournament.

Northeast, which raised its record to 25-0, played Southwest in a quarterfinal game Tuesday night.

"Scoring three runs in the first inning was a key," Northeast manager John Domeier said. "It gave us a real lift."

Waechter's single sparked another outburst in the sixth inning after Kyle Schueller and Tatum were hit by pitches.

Brian LeHeup and Johnny Domeier played strong defense to support the pitching of Hutchins, who struck out 10 and allowed three hits while going the distance.

Azalea's Mike Herbet had all three hits. Teammate Danny Vinciguerra struck out 11 and allowed four hits in five innings.

In other action in the Majors (ages 10-12):

Joshua Bellotti went the distance while striking out nine and allowing two earned runs as Southwest downed Gulfport 6-4 in its opener.

Jeremy Bellotti sparked the offense with two RBI while Brian Crane, Ryland Domke and Carson Lorey had key hits. Ryan Hussemann, Rand Domke and Crane played strong defense.

E.J. Ray hit a two-run homer in the first inning to ignite Seminole National past Baypoint 7-1 in its opening game Monday night.

Ray added a triple and James Gardner, Mike Hoben and Scott Mazzel produced singles in the fifth inning to extend Seminole's lead.

Hoben went the distance, allowing five hits and striking out six, to pick up the win.

Majors softball (ages 10-12): Leslie Footlick threw a two-hitter and struck out 16 as Northeast defeated Azalea 5-2 in its opener of the city tournament.

Tiffany Nelson and Carol King keyed Northeast's offense with two singles and a double each, while Shaunna Schiavone added two singles and Footlick had an RBI single.

In another game, Jennifer Leland had three hits, including a triple, as Northwest downed Pinellas Park National 9-7 in its opening game.

Haylie Clausen had two hits to aid the offense while Jody Irwin contributed a key two-run single. Andrea Henriott and Leland combined for the pitching win.

Seniors softball (ages 13-15): Tanya Fournier had two triples and a single to spark Gulfport to a 12-2 win over Northwest in its opener Monday night.

Heather McEligot added two singles and picked up the win while striking out seven and allowing two walks. Tracy O'Brien, Shelly Price, Monica Martin, Kelly King and Lori Baker all aided the offense with two hits each.
