Y sets karate lessons from age 4 up

The Hernando County Family YMCA is offering karate instruction for ages 4 and up.

The class will meet Tuesday and Thursday, 7:30-9 p.m., at the YMCA, 1300 Mariner Blvd., Spring Hill. Cost is $20 a month for facility members and $40 a month for program members.

Bill Baker, a second-degree black belt, is the instructor. Class studies will include akido (a Japanese martial arts discipline), hapkido (Chinese) and tai chi (Chinese) in addition to tang soo do.

Also, youths interested in signing up for basketball (ages 7-14), softball or street hockey are asked to call the YMCA at (904) 688-9622 by the end of this week.

Girls softball players can sign up through Saturday. Street hockey players who have not yet signed up can do so before the league draft on Friday. Individuals looking to join youth basketball, which gets under way this week, can still latch on to an existing team.

Basketball camps: Pasco-Hernando Community College will host its third annual basketball camp for players ages 7-18 in two sessions: June 21-25 for boys and July 12-16 for girls.

The camp will be held at PHCC's New Port Richey campus, in the Physical Fitness Center. Sessions will be held daily from 8:30 a.m.-noon.

PHCC head basketball coach Bobby Bowman is the camp director. Area players and coaches will instruct players on basketball fundamentals, videos and five-on-five games.

Cost is $75, which includes tuition, fees, instruction and a camp T-shirt. Players will be grouped according to age and ability, and awards will be given out to players in selected areas.

Also, River Ridge head coach Gary Zimmerman will conduct the Royal Knight basketball camp July 6-16 at River Ridge High School in New Port Richey.

Volleyball camp: Pasco-Hernando Community College's second annual volleyball camp for boys and girls in grades 6-12 will be held June 28-July 1.

The camp will be held at PHCC's New Port Richey campus, in the Physical Fitness Center. Sessions will be held daily from 1-4:30 p.m.

Camp director is Ursula Quoyeser, PHCC's head volleyball coach, and area players and coaches will coach at the camp.

Cost is $60, which includes tuition, fees, instruction and a camp T-shirt. Players will be grouped according to age and ability, and programs are available for beginning and advanced players.

Golf: The Hernando County Recreation Division is offering a junior golf program for three weeks starting July 19 for players ages 8-13.

Classes will be held each Monday and Wednesday at the County Line Golf Range, 9201 County Line Road, and Buzz Walker is the instructor. Cost is $35 per player.

Junior beginner/basic I classes will be held from 3-3:45 p.m., and junior short game/basic II will be held 4-4:45 p.m.
