A very bad day for a robbery

There's a time and a place for everything, but Tuesday was neither for brothers James and Scott Payne. In the space of 90 minutes, they managed to botch two bank robberies and three carjackings, police say. It could be a record. According to police, at 9:02 a.m. they hit their first bank. A dye pack ruined the cash. Okay, at 9:45 a.m., they tried a credit union. Same result. On the run, they put a gun to Candace Belden's head and demanded her car. "They held the gun to my head and said, "Move over,'

" Belden said. "I said no. All I could think to do was scream at the top of my lungs." The 5-foot-3, 105-pound woman screamed and kicked her attackers. After escaping Belden, they demanded keys from Mavis Brown outside a nearby store. She gave them one: the one to the gas cap. It didn't start the car. Samuel Delinian ran out of the store to aid Brown. The brothers took his car and even started it, but were soon seen by a deputy. They were arrested by 10:30 a.m. and were being held in the Orange County Jail on charges of strong-arm robbery. Federal charges could follow. Said Orange County sheriff's spokesman Carlos Padilla: "They just had a bad day."
