Clinton would rather jog alone

President Clinton managed to slip away from the White House for a jog Wednesday night without the usual flock of reporters in tow.

In fact he left on such short notice that a couple of Secret Service agents didn't have time to change. They ran alongside in their business suits.

The press pool ran out on the White House lawn. Clinton was gone. A van pulled up to carry the press to the president. But where had he run?

The van meandered through the nation's capital, with TV crew members calling out to startled passers-by, "Have you seen the president?"

"Seven blocks in that direction," hollered back one helpful cabbie, pointing toward the White House.

It turned out he was right.

Clinton jogged through downtown Washington and then back in the south entrance of the White House about five minutes before the van gave up its search.
