Florida College signs one

Calvin Bowens Jr., a 6-foot-6, 205-pound power forward from Christian Day School in Belle Glade, has signed with Florida College in Temple Terrace.

Bowens, who joins fellow recruit Carlton Bryant of St. Petersburg High, averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds last season.

Baseball signings: Plant City Post 26 infielder Terrance Freeman has signed a baseball scholarship at Edison Community College in Fort Myers, said Edison coach John Cedarburg. Freeman led Hillsborough County with 43 stolen bases in 1993 while playing for Class 4A, District 5 champion Bloomingdale, and was a 15th-round draft pick of the California Angels earlier this month. A good student, he opted for college instead of the professional ranks.

Two former Jefferson stars also have signed pro contracts. Left-handed pitcher Jeff Bawlson, a 1991 grad who played last year for West Tampa Post 248, has been assigned to Mesa of the rookie Arizona State League after signing this week with the Angels. Second baseman Manish Patel, a 1990 Jefferson grad who played three years of college ball at Yale, has signed with the Seattle Mariners, Cuesta said.
