Northeast continues District 5 Majors march

Hilt Tatum threw a no-hitter and smacked two homers as Northeast continued its surge through the District 5 Majors baseball City Tournament Tuesday night.

Tatum helped power unbeaten Northeast (26-0) to a 16-0 win over Southwest in the quarterfinals. He faced 13 batters and struck out 11. One batter reached base on an error, and another hit a line drive to rightfield that was caught by Chris Dean.

Spencer Hutchins gave Tatum all the support he needed in the first inning with a two-run blast.

Doug Waechter and Tatum connected for homers in the third, and Tatum hit his second following a walk to Jon Brett. Scott LeRoy had two of Northeast's 13 hits.

In other action among the Majors (ages 10-12):

Seminole American ran its unbeaten streak to 44 games over the past two seasons with a 10-0 blanking of Gulf Beaches in its tournament opener Tuesday night.

Ryan Klee threw five innings, allowing one hit and striking out five.

Brett Palenski, Colin Shaw, Kevin Cordes and Todd Moody sparked Seminole's five-run second inning with key hits.

Seminole added four more runs in the third on two two-run homers by Matt Miller and Shaw.

Cordes had three hits, including two doubles, while Adam Wilzinski, Joey Bednar and Klee also contributed at the plate.

Mike Herbert threw a four-hitter and struck out 12 in six innings as Azalea defeated Gulfport 9-2 in a losers bracket game.

Azalea's Danny Vinciguerra had a two-run homer and triple and knocked in four runs. Jimmy Goulah added a triple.

Jeff Keryluk struck out 12 of 22 batters as Pinellas Park National blanked Northwest 5-0 in its opener Tuesday night.

Boof Bonser hit a two-run homer and Jon Adkins had a two-run double. Kevin Farnbaugh, Kip Perry and Jason McDonald added key hits for Pinellas Park National.

Seniors baseball (ages 13-15): Adam Agosto hit a game-winning single in the fifth inning as Pinellas Park National edged Southwest 4-3 in its opening game Tuesday night.

Joey Caughn, Keith Sabiel, Paul Billitteri and Billy Avis also had key hits for Pinellas Park National.

Rick Powalski picked up the win while striking out nine and walking four.

Sean Price had two hits for Southwest.

Minors baseball (ages 9-12): Mike Fabrizio threw a one-hitter and struck out nine to power Cross Bayou No. 1 past Gulf Beaches No. 2 12-1 Tuesday night.

Brian Hanvill had a key two-run triple, and Alan Brooks, Jacon Jansen and Robbie Wood contributed three hits apiece.

Intermediates (age 13): Brian Lake tossed a no-hitter and fanned six as Seminole downed Gulf Beaches 11-1 in its opening game Tuesday night.

Seminole, which won its last 14 games in a row to capture its league championship, got key hits from Doug Relkin and Lake.

Seniors baseball (ages 13-15): Tommy Ruse threw a one-hitter and fanned five as Cross Bayou downed Baypoint 12-1 in its opener Tuesday night.

Keith DeLeeuw, Kevin DeLeeuw, Zach Farley and Chris Huber all came up with big hits.

Mark Robbins and Riley Weingart made key defensive plays to preserve the one-hitter.

Majors softball (ages 10-12): Asya Gordon threw a two-hitter and struck out 11 of 14 batters as Seminole blanked Northwest 14-0 in its opening game Tuesday.

Katie Larkin had three hits, and Sara Doetsch, Holly Groves, Courtney Llewllyn, Kristen Swann added two hits apiece.

In other games:

Tammy Newton had three hits, including two triples, and four RBI as Baypoint drubbed Pinellas Park American 17-4 in its opener Tuesday night.

Diedre Favero and Megan Kendler had two hits apiece to aid the offense, while Katey Breland pitched six innings and struck out six to get the win.

In a losing effort, Patty DeMichaels and Becky Burke had doubles and Maria Surls had two hits.

Elizabeth Galscock hit a grand slam in the fifth inning to spark Gulf Beaches to a 16-10 win over Cross Bayou Tuesday night.

Jenny Spain and Jessica Crane had RBI doubles for Gulf Beaches, and Katie Wilson had a sacrifice fly for an RBI.

Kelly Rosen, Galscock and Crane combined on the mound for the win.

Stacey Cabral threw a no-hitter while striking out 16 of the 25 batters she faced as Meadowlawn blanked Northeast 6-0.

Ashleigh Lutz had a two-run double, Cabral added a three-run single, and Kristin Kravitz had a key single to aid the win.

Seniors softball (ages 13-15): Lisa Wiley threw a no-hitter and fanned 12 as Pinellas Park National shut out Gulf Beaches 10-0 Monday night.

Pinellas Park advanced to the semifinals tonight at 7:30 against Gulfport when Baypoint forfeited.

In another game, Ashley Rayl threw a two-hitter and fanned six as Seminole defeated Meadowlawn 3-1 in its opener Monday night.

Julie Crabtree had a triple to spark the offense early in the game.
