Nuggets' Jackson signs deal

Denver guard Chris Jackson has a new contract and soon will have a new name.

The Nuggets announced Wednesday that they reached an agreement on a four-year contract with Jackson, voted the NBA's most improved player this season. Jackson had an option year for $4-million remaining on the four-year deal he signed in 1990, but the team had said it didn't plan to exercise it. That would have made Jackson a free agent on July

1.

Jackson also announced plans to legally change his name to Mahmoud Abdul Rauf. Jackson converted to Islam last summer and recently returned from a pilgrimage to Mecca. He said his name change will be official by next season.

Jackson averaged a team-high 19.9 points this season.

Elsewhere

Spurs: Center David Robinson had arthroscopic surgery to repair an injured right knee that bothered him all season. The surgery was to remove a small tear of the lateral meniscus and the associated cyst on Robinson's right knee. Robinson can resume workouts later this summer.
