A bullet fired during a gang shootout hit an 8-year-old boy in the chest but miraculously just bounced to the ground.
"It stung a little, but that was all," Mario Cervantes said Monday. "I was lucky I didn't get hurt."
The boy was playing handball a few blocks from home Sunday evening when the occupants of two cars began shooting at each other. Mario ducked, but a bullet ricocheted off a wall, hit his chest and bounced off.
Witnesses heard eight shots fired, according to police Sgt. Gary Gallinot. There were no arrests.
After dusting himself off, Mario walked home and described the incident to his mother.
"He came home and said, "Mom, I was shot.' I thought he was playing with me," said Rosa Cervantes.
But Mario had proof _ his friend found the bullet.
