Countryside marches to Majors title unbeaten

Countryside went unbeaten throughout the District 12 Tournament of Champions, capturing the Majors baseball championship Wednesday.

Countryside upended Palm Harbor National 9-1 to go 5-0 in the tournament and run its season record to 27-3.

"I'm very proud of all the boys," Countryside manager Steve Allen said. "They showed tremendous character in coming from behind in four of the five wins. They never gave up and just kept hitting the ball."

They did that again against a feisty Palm Harbor National team on Wednesday.

Sean Donahue went 4-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI, and Matt Guthrie and Ryan Szmiga each had two hits, including key doubles.

"We hit the ball really well," Allen said. "Everyone made a difference."

Kyle Lindskog and Matt Guthrie combined for a two-hitter while striking out nine.

Throughout the tournament for 10-12-year-olds, Countryside was led by Bronk Allen's hitting. He had nine RBI in the five games. Brendan Takacs went undefeated on the mound, and Greg Knable scored three runs in the title game.

Danny Mondelli played strong defense at third, John Gilbert had two stolen bases, and Steve Ulrich and Cameron Guthrie contributed off the bench.

Juniors baseball (age 13): Trevor Rhodes had a three-run triple and a single as Dunedin National downed Safety Harbor 8-3 in a Tournament of Champions winners game Wednesday.

John Godwin and Josh Kitterman combined for the win, allowing five hits and fanning nine.

Jeremy Lunn and Jacob Crowder contributed defensively to back up Dunedin's pitching.

Dunedin National will play the winner of Thursday's losers-bracket final between Countryside and Safety Harbor tonight at 7 at Clearwater American.

In other action, Chris Turtzo hit a game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh as Countryside upended Palm Harbor National in a 14-13, losers-bracket slugfest Wednesday night.

Kevin Campbell and Greg Olsen contributed two hits each while Jason Reynolds, Chad Mele and Geoff Peattie each had RBI singles.

Seniors baseball (ages 13-15): Mike Wilson threw a four-hitter in his first start since he was 12 years old as Dunedin American blanked West Pasco 8-0 in a losers-bracket game Wednesday.

Dunedin American played Clearwater National on Thursday night in a losers bracket final. The winner plays Dunedin National tonight at 7 at Englebert Complex for the overall championship.

Sean Hamilton had a key triple while Matt Thomas, Adam Greenfield and Vic Carapazzo had two hits apiece.

Majors softball (ages 10-12): Alanna Hazzard tossed a three-hitter and struck out 10 as Countryside upended Dunedin National 13-5 in a winners-bracket final Wednesday night.

Dunedin National played West Pasco in a losers-bracket final Thursday night. The winner plays Countryside tonight at 7 for the overall title.

Marci Herman, Lindsay Ijjas, Larisa Lanton and Shanna Hazzard each had two hits. Heather Morrison had a two-run infield hit.

In a losing cause, Heather Poekert had a two-run triple and Jessica Kurella had an RBI single. Cheryl Kalajainen had a double in the fourth inning.

Seniors softball (ages 13-15): West Pinellas continued its dominance, derailing Dunedin National 15-3 in a winners-bracket game Wednesday night.

West Pinellas (27-0), which has won four successive Tournament of Champions titles, can win its fifth with a victory tonight.

Against Dunedin National, Carli Skinner knocked in four runs and had three hits. Leslie Allen and Leslie Burdette added five hits between them while Michelle Bennett picked up the win, striking out eight and allowing two hits.

In other action, Michelle Ralat and Kasey Dowd combined for six hits and seven RBI between them as Countryside pounded Safety Harbor 24-10 in a losers-bracket game Wednesday night.

Countryside played Dunedin National in a losers-bracket final Thursday night. The winner plays West Pinellas tonight at 7 in West Pasco for the championship.

Keri Barlow contributed three hits and scored four runs while Shelly Pearl scored five runs to help lift Countryside.

Mary Sobush went the distance to pick up the win and added two hits and four RBI.
