Cross Bayou wins on an eighth-inning homer

Ian Church hit a solo homer in the top of the eighth inning as Cross Bayou edged Pinellas Park National 3-2 Wednesday night in the Majors baseball winners bracket of the District 5 City Tournament.

Cross Bayou plays unbeaten Northeast tonight at 7:30 at Northeast.

Church, who hit his 10th homer of the season, had two of Cross Bayou's three hits off losing pitcher Boof Bonser, who went the distance while striking out 13.

Brian Serata picked up the win for Cross Bayou, scattering eight hits and fanning 14 over the distance.

Pinellas Park National's Jeff Kerluk had two hits.

In other action in the Majors (ages 10-12):

Brett Palenski threw a two-hitter and fanned eight as Seminole American blanked Pinellas Park American 6-0 in a winners bracket game Wednesday night.

Seminole American stretched its unbeaten string to 46-0 and plays nemesis Seminole National in a semifinal game tonight at Pinellas Park National. During the season, Seminole American beat Seminole National twice.

Kevin Cordes' double scored Colin Shaw and Palenski, who had both singled, as Seminole American went on top early. Cordes had two hits and three RBI, and Palenski, Shaw, Moody and Adam Wilzinski added key hits.

Ryan Klee, John Hershberger, Joey Bednar, Wilzinski and Cordes made key defensive plays.

Scot Mazzei threw a one-hitter as Seminole National routed Meadowlawn 20-0 Wednesday night.

Mazzei sparked the offense as well, going 4-for-4, scoring three runs and knocking in two.

Saydeh Broke had a three-run double in the first to break the game open. Dom Gonzalez and Scott Lee combined for seven hits and Tim Abrahamson had a key hit.

Intermediate (age 13): Josh Statton scattered seven hits and fanned five in seven innings as Northwest upended Baypoint 8-4 in its City Tournament opener Wednesday night.

Joe Bannister had two singles and a double to spark Northwest, while catcher Josh Wilkins threw out two baserunners.

Tony Holliman hit a two-run homer for Baypoint.

In another game, Mike McGee threw a no-hitter as Pinellas Park National defeated Cross Bayou 25-4 Wednesday night.

McGee also paced Pinellas Park National's 25-hit outburst with four hits, while Kenny Davis, Nathan Grimard, Justin Loop and Jimmy Lindsey added three hits apiece.

Minors baseball (ages 9-12): Billy Tidwell threw a two-hitter and fanned seven to lead Baypoint No. 2 past Meadowlawn 21-7 in a winners bracket game Wednesday night.

Cory Ott had a triple and double to lift the offense, while Aaron Miltzer contributed three hits and Tidwell added two hits.

In other Minors action:

Zach Wendkos and Matt Lux hit two-run doubles to lift Northeast No. 1 to a 10-0 win over Azalea Wednesday night.

Ross Bender contributed two hits and Ryan Nachit had a key single on his 10th birthday.

Matt Cillian, Neil Holland, Lux and Wendkos played strong defense.

Greg Gundle tossed a five-hitter as Seminole No. 1 defeated Pinellas Park National No. 1 12-2 in its opening game.

Justin Holt had two singles and knocked in three runs to pace the Seminole offense, which had all nine starters contributing a run each.

T.J. Peets had a two-run double to lift Cross Bayou No. 2 to a 5-3 win over Pinellas Park National No. 2 in its opening game Wednesday night.

Jimmy Kubek pitched three scoreless innings for Cross Bayou, while John Gaines and Lucas Bonner keyed the defense.

Majors softball (ages 10-12): Tammy Newton hit two grand slams as Baypoint downed Gulfport 16-4 in its second game of the tournament.

Baypoint has outscored its opposition in two games 33-8.

Jeanine Skinner added a homer for Baypoint while Heather Ratliff had a single and triple.

Deidre Favero struck out five and went the distance for Baypoint.

Seniors softball (ages 13-15): Christy Broome had 13 strikeouts while facing 25 batters and allowed four hits as Azalea trimmed Northeast 5-4 in a winners bracket game Wednesday.

Michelle Betz, Cassie May, Stacey Ferrier and Broome had key hits for Azalea.

Earlier, Caley Parker threw a no-hitter and fanned seven as Azalea blanked Cross Bayou 10-0 in its opening game Tuesday. Missy Hutson, Betz and Broome led the offense with key singles, and Shawna Calcaterra and Stephanie Stuart played strong defense.

In other action, Suzzette Bernardo fanned nine and threw a two-hitter as Meadowlawn downed Gulf Beaches 5-2 in a losers bracket game Wednesday night.

Jessica Roberts had two singles to ignite the offense while Amanda Bettker and Cassie Hawkins added key hits.

In a losing effort, Crystal Sellers had an RBI single and Erica Crane and Mandy Stephens had doubles.
