Hernando standouts on Musial team

Several Hernando County standouts dot the Florida State Stan Musial Collegiate Baseball Association's Gulf Coast Yankees team, which now plays in Tampa after spending five years on the North Suncoast.

The Yankees (not to be confused with the New York Yankees' Gulf Coast League affiliate of the same name, which also plays in Tampa) formerly played their home games in Hernando County, then at Saint Leo College.

A Lindenwood (Mo.) College connection is at the backbone of the Gulf Coast team, including Hernando grad Cory Tibbs, Central's Jayson Pierce, and Springstead alumni Jon Peel and Matt Klasnik.

Other former North Suncoast stars playing in the Stan Musial league include Ralph Luciani and Eric Rice of Pasco, Chris Cumberland of Pasco-Hernando Community College, and Joe Bertucci, the Ridgewood graduate recently released by the Angels.

Another Stan Musial team, the Florida Suns, also has left Hernando County for Tampa.

Most of the players are area high school graduates now playing in college or, in a few cases, former draftees waiting for another chance in the minors. For further information on the league, contact Joe Pepitone at 686-8459.
