Griffins at Snell Isle again

are damaged by vandals

ST. PETERSBURG _ For the second time in a year, vandals damaged some of the griffins that decorate Snell Isle. This time, they struck late Wednesday night, knocking over the two statues at the foot of the Snell Isle Bridge at the intersection of Brightwaters Boulevard and Snell Isle Boulevard. The statues were placed at the bridge about two months ago as part of a neighborhood landscaping project, said Dr. Lester Wolff, treasurer of the Snell Isle Property Owners Association and vice president of the Snell Isle Foundation. He said residents in the area are offering a $1,000 reward for anyone with information resulting in the arrests and conviction of the vandals. The damaged statues, which weigh about 1,200 pounds, are valued at $2,500 combined. Last June, vandals broke off the wings of the statues at Snell Plaza Park on Snell Isle Boulevard. If anyone has information, call Wolff, 821-9100.
