Retired Times publisher is honored

Jack Lake, retired publisher of the St. Petersburg Times and Evening Independent and key leader in the effort to bring Major League Baseball to St. Petersburg, has been named a Paul Harris Fellow by the downtown Rotary Club of St. Petersburg. The award, named after the founder of Rotary International, is the highest honor bestowed on individuals by the Rotary Foundation. Lake, a former Rotarian, was chosen for the award by the club membership in recognition of his many contributions and years of service to the community.

Sears to close hardware store

ST. PETERSBURG _ The Sears Hardware Store at 5515 Fourth St. N is closing, store officials say. "Basically they are downsizing," said assistant manager Barb Altenhain. Remaining merchandise includes paint products, manual tools and accessories, and some is being discounted at up to 70 percent off. The store, which has been open for 4{ years, will close within a few weeks, Altenhain said. The only Sears hardware store that will remain open in the area is the one at 34th Street and 38th Avenue S.
