And even the mightiest shall fall

It was an upsetting turn of events in the District 5 Majors baseball (ages 10-12) Tournament on Friday night.

Seminole National shocked rival and nemesis Seminole American 6-4 in a winner's bracket game, snapping American's two-year string of 45 consecutive wins. American, which won the District 12 tournament last year, had beaten National twice during the regular season.

Still another streak was stopped Friday as well.

Unheralded Cross Bayou scored four runs in the first inning and downed previously unbeaten Northeast 4-1, snapping its string of 26 straight wins this season.

Cross Bayou, which never has advanced into the winner's bracket final, played Seminole National on Saturday on its home field.

Ian Church led the way for Cross Bayou against Northeast, getting three hits and throwing a three-hitter while striking out 11.

Kenny Danielski supplied the offensive firepower in the first inning with one of his two doubles, which knocked in two runs. Later, Charlie Wedmier added a two-run blast. Owen Colton had three hits while outfielder Kyle Craig played solid defense.

In a losing cause, Spencer Hutchins of Northeast pitched well and had a hit to drive in a run.

In other action, E.J. Ray hit a homer in the first and Al Saydeh had a two-run double in the third as Seminole National won.

Dom Gonzalez tripled to highlight Seminole National's two-run first inning while Scot Mazzei and Mike Hoben had singles.

Ross Schaefer, Scott Lee and James Gardner played well defensively to backup Hoben's pitching. He went the distance while striking out seven and walking one.

In a losing effort, Kevin Cordes and Brett Palenski had three hits and Todd Moody and Ryan Klee had RBI singles.

In other action: Steve Weck, Mike MaGee and Ben Kozlowski combined for nine hits as Gulf Beaches blasted Pinellas Park National 15-2 in a loser's bracket game.

Tim Trimble and Kozlowski combined on the win, allowing one hit while Matt Scott, Robert Parker and Brian Phillips had clutch hits and played well defensively.

Minors baseball (9-12): Richard Kain, Chris Rollinson and Scott Loar combined for six hits while knocking in eight runs as Pinellas Park American downed Northeast No. 1 9-6 in a loser's bracket game.

Rick Johnson and Chad Brongers combined to get the win for Pinellas Park American.

In other action: Mick Barger fanned 10 and allowed two hits in six innings as Northeast No. 2 upended Baypoint No. 2 7-2 in a winner's bracket game.

Barger also scored two runs while J.P. Jernigan added two hits for Northeast No. 2.

Aaron Meltzer and Chris Johain and Tracy Ewin had hits in a losing effort for Baypoint No. 2.

In other action: Tom Murray and David Keifer combined to get the win as Azalea thumped Baypoint No. 1 22-3 in a loser's bracket game on Friday night.

Ben Barber led the way offensively on his ninth birthday while Eric Wettmann, Karl Joyner, Chris Waechter and Greg Spychola contributed hits. Michael Groeski played strong defense.

In other action: Justin Morris and Matt Previtera allowed two hits and fanned eight as Seminole No. 2 defeated Cross Bayou No. 2 4-1 in a winner's bracket game.

David Moore added two hits for Seminole No. 2.

Seniors baseball (ages 13-15): Lucious Bryant's two-run single was the highlight of a six-run outburst as Baypoint rallied from a 6-2 deficit to upend Gulf Beaches 10-8 in a loser's bracket game Friday.

Eric Smith pitched three innings in relief to get the win for Baypoint.

Seniors softball (ages 13-15): Tanya Fournier collected three hits and Shelly Price knocked in the winning run as Gulfport downed Azalea 7-5 in a winner's bracket game on Friday night.

Tracy O'Brien and Monica Martin added hits for Gulfport while Heather McEligot picked up the win, throwing four innings.

In other action, Suzzette Bernardo threw a no-hitter and fanned five as Meadowlawn shut out Pinellas Park National 18-0 in a loser's bracket game.

Erica Lord and Stacy Abel combined for six RBI and five hits. Kathy Havens, Courtney Cabral and Cassie Hawkins added two hits apiece.

Majors softball (ages 10-12): Halie Claussen had four hits and knocked in seven runs, including a grand slam as Northwest upended Azalea 19-14 in a loser's bracket game.

Jennifer Leland had two hits, including a grand slam and Andrea Newton had three hits.

In other action, Leslie Footlick struck out 16 of 21 batters and walked two as Northeast blanked Pinellas Park National 6-0 in a loser's bracket game.

Angie Radjeski and Megan Lampman had two hits apiece to lift the offense while Shaunna Schiavone, Tiffany Nelson, Carol King and Hannah Shoaf contributed singles.
