CRUISE SHIP INSPECTIONS

SAFE AT SEA

This is a chart of sanitation inspection results for cruise ships calling on U.S. ports. The inspections, which are not announced in advance, are performed by the federal Center for Environmental Health and Injury Control. General areas of inspection are: potable water, food preparation and holding, potential contamination of food, and general cleanliness and storage. There are dozens of specific examinations made, and a failure in any one of the major areas will reduce the score below the satisfactory score of 86.

Generally, the lower the score, the lower the level of sanitation. Ships scoring 85 or less are reinspected more quickly than those with satisfactory scores. The highest score possible is 100.

A summary of the inspections appears in Travel once a month. To receive a free copy of the most recent summary, write to Chief, Vessel Sanitation Program, Center for Environmental Health and Injury Control, 1015 North America Way, Room 107, Miami, FL 33132.

TRAVEL LOG

As a travel writer for more than a decade, the Washington Post's James T. Yenckel notes that his best trips have been the ones in which he invested the most thought before departure. Some tips:

Don't wait until the last minute to decide where to go, especially if your choice turns out to be an appealing destination to which everyone else is headed.

Pick a vacation that allows you to do things you like to do or have always wanted to try; make your time count.

Don't take a vacation because other people think it is fun; ask yourself whether it will be fun for you.

Be alert to your mood. You won't enjoy a trip, no matter how much the idea appeals to you, if you aren't mentally or physically prepared.

If an offbeat vacation idea tempts, give it a try, even if you can't convince family or friends to join you.

Never choose a destination simply because it's touted as a cheap place to go. Instead, pick a place that has tempted you for a long time, and put some effort into finding out how to get there at a price you can afford.

The more you discover about the place you are visiting _ by touring, reading or talking to residents _ the deeper your appreciation will be. I always visit a bookstore at my destination to look for books on local history and lore.
