Even if they win this weekend, the Chicago Bulls have at least two years to go before they can match the West Pinellas Little League's winning streak in Seniors (ages 13-15) softball.
This year's West Pinellas entry won the title for the fifth straight year, one of three teams to claim titles in the District 12 Tournament of Champions on Friday night.
"It just shows how dedicated these girls are to the game of softball," West Pinellas coach Chuck Poetter said. "They're outrageous about softball."
It helps to have a little Thunder and Lightning as teammates Leslie Allen and Michelle Bennett have been nicknamed.
The two along with Michelle Bauer have had a hand in five straight tournament championships (two in the majors and three in seniors).
Unbeaten (28-0) West Pinellas rolled out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning against Dunedin National behind Allen's triple and Bennett's homer. Later, the game was called after an inning and a half because a Dunedin National player was injured, leaving Dunedin with just eight players. Poetter said Little League rules state you must have nine players to play, although he was hoping to appeal.
West Pinellas rolled through five straight games in the tournament behind help from Carly Skinner, Dani Trent, Shauntee Heller, Laura Bauer, Mari Orneales and Trisha Everats. Catcher Leslie Burdett played strong throughout the tournament behind the plate.
Other championships included Dunedin National in the Juniors baseball (age 13) and Countryside in the Majors softball (ages 10-12).
Dunedin National won it for a second straight year while Countryside won its first Majors Tournament of Champions softball title.
Juniors baseball (age 13): Josh Kitterman fanned seven through five innings while knocking in four runs on four hits to lead Dunedin National past Safety Harbor 18-2 and its championship.
Theo Mamouzelos and Jacob Crowder combined for five hits and five RBI to help lead the way while Trevor Rhodes, Mike Rowe, Jeremy Lunn, Judson Angelillis, Billy O'Connell and Eric Smith contributed hits. John Godwin played solid defense throughout the tournament.
Majors softball (ages 10-12): Twin sisters Shanna and Alanna Hazzard helped lead Countryside to five straight wins, including Countryside's 13-8 win over Dunedin National Friday night in the title game.
Shanna scattered eight hits and fanned seven in six innings while Alanna sparked the offense with three hits. Shanna contributed also with two hits.
Marci Herman and Jackie McGarry had three hits apiece while Lauren Meder, Heather Morrison and Tara Webb scored two runs each. Larisa Lanton and Lindsey Ijjas played strong defense.
Seniors baseball (ages 13-15): Vince Parisi walked, stole second and scored on Sean Hamilton's game-winning single as Dunedin American edged Dunedin National 4-3 in a winner's bracket final Friday.
The two teams played again Saturday for the overall championship.
Brian Connell and Parisi combined to get the win for Dunedin American. Matt Thomas, Vic Carapazza and Connell also starred on offense.
