The American Association of Retired Persons is seeking volunteer instructors for the 55 Alive-Mature Driving Course.
The person must be 50 or older, a member of AARP and must have successfully completed the 55 Alive course. The volunteer must take a two-day instructor course and be willing to teach at least three classes per year.
The instructor gets no salary but is paid mileage and is allowed up to $5 each day for lunch.
The 55 Alive course is scheduled at various locations in Pasco County during the year to help older drivers sharpen their skills to prevent accidents. The driver improvement course is eight hours of classroom work for drivers 50 and older.
Florida law requires all automobile insurance carriers to offer a discount on premiums to qualified graduates ages 55 and older of approved courses such as the AARP 55 Alive Course. The course costs $8 per person.
People interested in taking the course should contact Bill Angle Sr., assistant state coordinator, 2039 Pepperell Drive, New Port Richey, FL 34655-4127, or call (813) 372-8610. For those living in east Pasco, call Bob Rawlings, (813) 788-9613.
People who want to attend an evening class should send their name, address and telephone number to Angle. Evening courses are limited to people who work and are unable to attend daytime courses.
Angle said any club, church or organization that wants to have a course at its facility should call or write him. Slide projectors are used in teaching the class. Donations of working slide projectors are requested. The donated slide projector will remain the property of AARP 55 Alive and will be on loan to instructors.
