Man charged with arson

Dereck Andrew Gill, 38, of 1415 N Florida Ave. was charged Saturday with first-degree arson in the fire Saturday afternoon at Metro Recycling, 1301 27th St., near Ybor City. Gill, who also was charged April 7 with arson in a fire at the Plaza Food Mart on 5006 E 10th Ave., was held without bail at Hillsborough County Jail.

Fire damages Tampa house

TAMPA _ A house fire sent black smoke high into the air above Interstate 275 Sunday afternoon. The house, at 2206 N 10th St., was damaged heavily but there were no injuries, said a Tampa Fire Department report. No one was home when the fire started, authorities said. The cause of the fire and the amount of damages had not been determined late Sunday, fire officials said.

Motorcyclist killed in accident

HOMOSASSA _ A 39-year-old Beverly Hills man died Friday night after a car pulled into the path of the motorcycle he was riding, the Florida Highway Patrol reported. Robert Russell Markus of 4207 Breckenridge Court was pronounced dead at Seven Rivers Hospital in Crystal River. A passenger on the 1973 Harley Davidson motorcycle, Donna C. Zeltner, 36, of the same address, was in serious condition with head injuries at Shands Hospital in Gainesville. The accident occurred at Dunkenfield Avenue and Avocado Street when a 1992 Pontiac driven by William K. Mauney, 33, of 986 N. Lyle Ave., Crystal River, pulled in front of the motorcycle. Mauney suffered minor injuries, and a passenger in his car was uninjured.

Ex-boyfriend shoots man, 18

ST. PETERSBURG _ An 18-year-old man was shot twice Sunday night when his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend showed up at his apartment and started an argument, police said. Walter K. Jones of 1711 55th Ter. S, Apt. C, St. Petersburg, was treated and released from Bayfront Medical Center after being shot in the left leg and hand. Jones was at his apartment with his girlfriend about 4:15 p.m. when her ex-boyfriend arrived. When Jones confronted him, the ex-boyfriend grabbed a shotgun from a car and started shooting. The man followed Jones and his girlfriend into their apartment and out the rear door, shooting the whole time. Police later arrested Donta A. Bryant of 2043 10th St. S, St. Petersburg, and charged him with being an accessory to aggravated battery. Police said Bryant gave the ex-boyfriend a ride to the house. Police were searching for the ex-boyfriend Sunday night.
