School thanks patron for help

Bill D. Johnson, president of Instrument Transformers Inc. of Clearwater, received the Superintendent's Honorary High School Degree designation at Clearwater High School's graduation ceremony Thursday night.

Johnson was honored for his support of Pinellas County schools, primarily through the Doorways program that links at-risk students to individual mentors and community and social services.

Johnson "adopted" Robinson Challenge School in Clearwater and recruited his employees as volunteers, offering them paid time to work at the school, providing payroll deduction for contributions to the school and donating more than $40,000 for student scholarships.

Robinson Challenge School thanked Johnson for his commitment to and support of the school in a ceremony June 4. The school presented to him an engraved granite stone, which later was placed in cement on the school grounds.
