10-year-old wins essay contest

Michael Adkins, 10, won first place in the Father of the Year Essay Contest sponsored by members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4340. The contest was open to all children in the greater Brandon area. Michael wrote that his father deserved the award because he is taking care of three children while Michael's mother is in the hospital.

"He pays the bills, cooks, works and even buys clothes," wrote Michael. "He works late, but gives us chores. He is special."

Representatives from the Times, the Tampa Tribune and the Brandon News judged the 300 entries.

Michael won an all-day deep-sea fishing trip for two out of John's Pass.

Second-place winner, Christina Hazen, 11, won a dinner for two from Phil's restaurant and third-place winner, Zack Schneider, 13, won a lunch for two at Armand's restaurant.

Coming in fourth was Tiffany Bader, 11; fifth, Alison Ascani, 11; and sixth-place went to Amber Crowley, 11.
