Melody A. Barron was honored Tuesday by Gov. Lawton Chiles and the Cabinet as 1993 state Trooper of the Year, the first woman to get the award in its 28-year history. Barron, of Highway Patrol Troop L in Palm Beach County, was cited for heroism for her actions on April 28, 1992, when she saved a tractor-trailer driver from a fiery Interstate 95 accident and braved a cloud of toxic pesticide fumes. Barron spent two days in the hospital with respiratory problems after the accident. The award is given annually by the Florida Petroleum Council.
