Seminole American ousts Northeast 8-5 in Majors

Seminole American overcame a 5-1 deficit to defeat Northeast 8-5 in a losers bracket game of the District 5 Majors baseball tournament Monday night.

Seminole American played Seminole National in a losers bracket final Tuesday night. The winner plays unbeaten Cross Bayou for the ages 10-12 championship today at Northeast.

"The kids really bounced back," Seminole American manager Melanie Cordes said. "They just hung in there and fought hard."

Trailing 5-1 in the third inning, Seminole American cut the deficit to 5-3 with hits from Todd Moody, Adam Wilzinski, Joey Bednar and Matt Miller.

In the fourth, Colin Shaw hit a two-run homer to tie the game at 5, and in the sixth, after Brett Palenski and Shaw singled, Kevin Cordes hit a two-run double. Ryan Klee knocked in Cordes with a single to make it 8-5.

Klee picked up the win in relief, allowing five hits and one run in 5 innings. Palenski and Cordes each had three hits and two RBI to lead the offense.

Minors baseball (ages 9-12): Chad Brangers struck out 10 and picked up the win as Pinellas Park American edged Azalea 3-2 in a losers bracket game.

Frank Trinkaus, Mike Rienhold and Timmy Burke had key hits for the winners.

Ben Barber threw a three-hitter and catcher Michael Goreski played strong defense for Azalea.

In other action, Tommy Weaver hit a two-out, bases-loaded single that scored Eddie Chilanick with the winning run as Pinellas Park National No. 1 trimmed Seminole No. 1 8-7 in a losers bracket game.

Cody Gelwick, Matt McGee, Weaver and Chilanick led the way offensively, combining for 11 hits. Chris Gerber and Weaver combined for the pitching win.

Intermediates (age 13): Jeff Arcand hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning as Seminole upended Gulf Beaches 10-8 in a losers bracket game.

Ben Yannessa, Brian Lake and Larry Talento had two hits, and Yannessa stole four bases.

In other action, Revel Rosario threw a four-hitter and struck out 10 as Gulfport edged Northeast 2-1 in a losers bracket game.

Charles Rhodes, Ryan Apuzzo and Ray White had key hits for Gulfport.

Majors softball (ages 10-12): Baypoint scored 18 runs in the fifth inning to rally from an 8-5 deficit and down Northwest 23-10 in a losers bracket game.

Heather Ratliff, Tammy Newton and Jeanine Skinner sparked the outburst with extra-base hits, while Tanya Bonilla, Mandy Hobby, Deidre Favero and Rita Kana added hits.

Seniors baseball (ages 13-15): Shawn Wagner knocked in four runs, two with a homer, as Baypoint defeated Pinellas Park National 8-2 in a losers bracket game. Damien Hurm added a solo blast. P.J. Penrose got the win, allowing seven hits.

In other action, Tommy Ruse struck out seven and picked up the win as Cross Bayou downed Southwest 14-4 in a losers bracket game.

Kevin DeLeeuw and Keith DeLeeuw keyed the offense with extra-base hits. Gerald Frazier and Riley Weingart played strong defense for Cross Bayou.

Seniors softball (ages 13-15): Caley Parker had an RBI triple and double and pitched the full game as Azalea defeated Seminole 14-9 in the losers bracket. Cassie May had a three-run double and Kieley Hughes had a double-play.
