16-under AAU wins the regional for state games

The Suncoast 16-and-under boys basketball team captured the Sunshine State Games regional title but will not be going to the state tournament July 1-4. Instead, it will be in the national AAU tournament the same weekend in Oklahoma City.

Suncoast won four straight games in the regional behind Eric Harris,Nate Weyand and Tony DiBuno, who averaged 14 points and 12 rebounds throughout the tournament.

The team is accepting donations for its trip to Oklahoma City and has a golf tournament planned for Saturday at the Bardmoor Country Club. Cost is $45 and it begins at 1 p.m. For more information, call Dave Redding at 596-4981.

Osceola coach resigns: Osceola soccer coach Bob Goebel has resigned, but will remain as the school's assistant swimming coach, Osceola athletic director Mike Corrigan announced. Corrigan said anyone interested in the soccer job should send him resumes at the school, 9751 98th St. N, Largo 34647.

2 coaches take leave: Two Dixie Hollins High coaches, volleyball veteran Cheryl Adams and girls basketball coach Marisa Carmody, are taking leaves of absence, assistant principal Donna Blumer announced.

Rebels swim coach Vicki Woods also is stepping down, Blumer said.

Qualified persons interested in filling the vacant posts are asked to contact school administrators at 546-2411.

Bombers game tonight: The Clearwater Bombers men's fast-pitch softball team will play a team from the Virgin Islands tonight at 7 p.m. at Bombers Stadium on Old Coachman Road just north of Drew Street. Immediately afterward, the Virgin Islands will play the Tampa Bay Bullets. Admission is $2.

Southside Youth Soccer: The Southside Youth Soccer League will have tryouts Saturday at the Lakewood Soccer Complex, Country Club Way and Green Way. Players must wear cleats and shin guards. Tryout times and fields are as follows, with phone numbers for more information in parentheses:
