Veterinarian Mike Dunbar, on truck, and Walter McCown, a state wildlife biologist, again release a Texas cougar into the Big Gum National Wildlife Management Area, north of Sanderson. The cat wandered 150 miles north, past Statesboro, Ga., after being released into a north Florida forest in February. Texas cougars are being used to determine if the Florida panther can be reintroduced into the Pinhook Swamp area north of Lake City. If the cougars, which are close cousins to the Florida panthers, thrive there, panthers might be reintroduced. "A lone animal going into central Georgia . . . wasn't helping," McCown said.
