Ripe for the picking

Workers pick watermelons, above, in a field off State Road 44 east of Citrus Hills. Bo Hailey planted 150 acres there in a joint venture with Melon King. He expects to fill 60 semitrailer trucks for shipment as far away as Canada. At left, Leon Vernon of Oklahoma City tosses a watermelon to a worker on a truck. Melons heavier than 24 pounds are sold at the field for $3.
