Seminole American showed why it won 45 straight games during the regular season as the District 5 Majors baseball tournament continued Tuesday night.
After losing earlier to Seminole National and having its string of 45 consecutive wins snapped, Seminole American has bounced back to win two straight games in the losers bracket, including Tuesday's 12-4 rout of Seminole National.
"We're on a roll right now," Seminole American manager Melanie Cordes said. "We feel ready to win two."
Seminole American must now defeat unbeaten Cross Bayou twice, starting tonight at Northeast beginning at 7 p.m., to capture the Majors (ages 10-12) title for a second consecutive year.
Joey Bednar hit a grand slam in the first inning and Colin Shaw and Adam Wilzinski added RBI singles as Seminole American went ahead 6-0.
Brett Palenski hit a solo homer in the second, and Todd Moody's two-run single extended the lead.
Bednar ended the night with five RBI and two hits while Kevin Cordes had a triple and John Hershberger, Shaw and Moody had two hits apiece.
Cordes picked up the win, fanning three and walking one while allowing the four runs.
In a losing effort, Mike Hoben, E.J. Ray and Scot Mazzei had three hits apiece, Ross Schaefer and Dom Gonzalez had two apiece, and Al Saydeh, Scott Lee, James Gardner and Dan Trnka contributed hits.
Minors baseball (ages 9-12): Chris Rollinson had a double and triple and knocked in four runs as Pinellas Park American defeated Baypoint No. 2 11-7 in a losers bracket game Tuesday night.
Shawn Richard added two RBI and had two stolen bases while Rick Johnson and Mike Rienhold combined to get the win.
In a losing cause, Tracy Ewin had three hits, including two doubles, and Aaron Meltzer, Billy Tidwell and Joe McKinney added two hits each.
In other action, John Gaines threw six innings and allowed five hits to get the win as Cross Bayou No. 2 downed Pinellas Park National No. 1 6-3 in a losers bracket game.
Adam Greenburg, Brian Mayberry and Nicholas Harper sparked the offense with two hits apiece.
Intermediate baseball (age 13): John Cleckner fanned six and allowed five hits as Seminole upended Gulfport 15-4 in a losers bracket game.
Larry Talento, Billy Johnson and Brian Lake combined for seven hits to spark the offense.
In another losers bracket game, Danny Mangual and Thatcher Heller combined for five hits and six RBI as Pinellas Park National defeated Northwest 13-1.
Nathan Grimard and Mike McGee added two hits each while McGee threw a two-hitter and fanned 11 to get the win.
Seniors baseball (ages 13-15): Eric Smith struck out eight and tossed a three-hitter as Baypoint upended Azalea 11-1 in a losers bracket game Tuesday.
Smith aided his cause with a homer, two doubles and three RBI. Damien Hurm added a three-run blast.
In other action, Keith DeLeeuw had two hits, including a homer, and two RBI as Cross Bayou edged Northwest 3-2 in a losers bracket game.
Zack Farley contributed three hits and Gerald Frazier had a couple. Riley Weingart struck out five and picked up the win for Cross Bayou.
Majors softball (ages 10-12): Kristin Kravitz threw a four-hitter, fanned 11 and had a two-run triple as Meadowlawn downed Baypoint 12-2 in a losers bracket game Tuesday night.
Stacey Cabral and Abbie Haugh had two hits apiece to aid the offense.
Seniors softball (ages 13-15): Cristy Broome fired a three-hitter, striking out 10 and walking one, as Azalea downed Gulfport 13-2 to set up a championship game Wednesday night.
Cassie May sparked the offense with a triple while Michele Betz, Caley Parker and Broome had doubles. Stephanie Stuart and Kieley Hughes had RBI singles to aid the offense.
