Hudson High grad wins UPS scholarship

Carissa Wanzie, daughter of Thomas Wanzie of Port Richey and a recent graduate of Hudson High School, is the recipient of a George D. Smith Scholarship won in competition offered by the UPS Foundation, which is supported through grants from United Parcel Service.

Thirty such scholarships were awarded nationwide this year to children of UPS employees. The scholarships range up to $2,000 annually for students who plan to enter accredited vocational, technical, community college or junior college programs of two years or less.

Miss Wanzie plans to attend Pasco-Hernando Community College. She eventually hopes to pursue a degree in pediatric medicine. Her father is a tractor-trailer driver at the UPS facility in Port Richey.

VFW Auxiliary entertains vets

HUDSON _ The Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7631 of Hudson entertained 13 wheelchair patients from Tampa's James A. Haley VA Hospital recently.

The veterans attended a luncheon in their honor at the post, 13129 Colony Road.

Mary Mayer was chairwoman, and Peggy Fortin, co-chairwoman. Ray Mayer, post chaplain, assisted the Auxiliary. Honored guests included Linda Burnette, District 21 Auxiliary president, and her husband and daughter.

VFW, auxiliary win awards

HOLIDAY _ Judy Denham, president of Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary 10167 of Holiday, attended the 63rd annual convention in Kissimmee recently.

She accepted three national awards, including those for membership, Americanism and community service.

State awards won by the Auxiliary included Voice of Democracy and Cancer Aid and Research, a third place in Class A, VFW National Home; second Place Class A, publicity and legislature; VFW PAC and joint awards for Post Blood Bank Drive and Buddy Poppy Drive.

Al Masterson, commander of Post 10167, also attended the 63rd annual VFW convention and accepted awards for the Voice of Democracy, Loyalty Day, Safety Program, Community Service, Americanism, Memorial Day, Blood Bank and Poppy Drive.

Auxiliary assists flood victims

HUDSON _ The Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4412 of Hudson conducted a drive for funds for the babies who are victims of the Mississippi floods.

The Auxiliary collected $185.25. Bernadette Vaughn, auxiliary president, purchased diapers, formula, baby wipes and powder. The items were presented to VFW District 21 to be forwarded to the needy.
