DAR history winner honored

Beth St. Martin is the winner of the Daughters of the American Revolution's annual American history essay contest.

She was awarded a certificate and a medal at a recent luncheon of the Boca Ciega Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Beth is in the seventh grade at Sacred Heart School in Pinellas Park. She is the daughter of Peter and Darlene St. Martin of Seminole.

Gibbs senior wins

N.C. scholarship

Jonathan Kimball Black of St. Petersburg was awarded the Presidential Scholarship for Pfeiffer College in North Carolina.

The scholarship, for incoming freshmen, was awarded for his academic achievements at Gibbs Senior High School and his standardized test scores.

SPJC forensic team

competes in tournament

The St. Petersburg Junior College Forensic team competed in the Florida Community College Activities Association Forensic Tournament in Gainesville earlier this month. The team won third place in the state in individual events.

Megan Daw won second in informative speaking, third in oral interpretation and third in poetry interpretation. Treena Oppliger placed fourth in oral interpretation and fifth in informative speaking. Curtis Korsko won third in informative speaking.

Rebecca Gross won sixth place in dramatic interpretation. Gross also won fourth place in dramatic duo with R.J. Latherow.

Trip Williams placed seventh in prose interpretation in the semi-finals.

North Shore pupil does

well in photo contest

A.J. Jackson, a third-grader at North Shore Elementary School, won two awards in the Boyd Hill Nature Park photography contest.

She won first place in the children's category with her picture of an alligator, a turtle and a heron at Sawgrass Lake Park. A photo of hers at Kachemak Bay in Alaska of flowers in the foreground and glaciers in the background won an honorable mention.

She was awarded cash and prizes.

She is the daughter of Ron and Mary Jackson of St. Petersburg.
