Quayle prepares to defend his club title at Zephyrhills

Jim Quayle, a 62-year-old native of Michigan, sounds like he's ready to defend his club championship, beginning Saturday at Zephyrhills Municipal.

Quayle fired a two-round total of 150 last year to win his first club title.

He's been playing at Zephyrhills for the past five seasons.

"It wasn't the best (score) for me, but apparently it was good enough," Quayle said.

The tournament is broken up over two weekends. Saturday's results will be used to divide the field into flights. The final round then will be held on March 12.

Although confident, Quayle still will have to deal with his emotions.

"I'm feeling a little bit nervous," he said. "You know how that goes. Not too bad, though."

The women's club championship final was scheduled to be played last Saturday at Zephyrhills Municipal.

Heading into the final round, June Parker held a 3-stroke lead, after firing a 78 in qualifying play the previous week.

Zora Nichols was next at 81 and Carol Quinn held the third position with an 82.

Martha King was the next closest player. She posted an 84 in the opening round.

The ladies field was divided into three flights.

The number of flights in the men's segment has yet to be decided.
