GAMES OF THE WEEK: OLYMPIC-STYLE GAMES
FOR: SUPER NINTENDO, GENESIS, GAME GEAR
Watching the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer the last few weeks had us ready to do something stupid, like throw ourselves off a snowcovered mountain with a couple of boards strapped to the bottoms of our feet. Fortunately, game makers are looking out for us with these games:
WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES: LILLEHAMMER '94, SUPER NINTENDO, GENESIS, GAME GEAR _ This game is brought to you by the same people who did Barcelona '92, the Summer Olympics cart that made our best games list that year. The winter version is every bit as good, mixing crisp graphics and great sound for realistic competition.
You and a handful of friends can compete (choosing to represent almost any country) in Olympic events like bobsled, ski jumping, speed skating, and downhill and slalom skiing.
If you're looking for a way to experience the thrill of victory without the agony of falling off a mountain, check this one out. RATINGS _ VIOLENCE FACTOR 0; KID (under 7) 6; MID-KID (7 to 12) 9; TEEN (13 to 18) 9; BIG KID (over 18) 9
BRETT HULL HOCKEY, FOR SUPER NES _ Okay, so it's not Olympic hockey, it's professional. But it is hockey, and we couldn't find an amateur hockey game.
In addition to having Brett Hull's name on it, this one's licensed by the National Hockey League Player's Association, which means you get all the real teams and players.
The perspective is a little different from other hockey games, coming from behind the goal at the bottom of the screen as if there were a camera perched a few feet behind the net. That makes play easier if you're working at the bottom of the screen _ you can pick your shots more carefully, or better position your goalie for a save _ but it also makes things trickier at the top of the screen.
If you're looking for a hockey cart that won't make you knock your own teeth out in frustration, this might be for you. VF 4; K 5; MK 8; T 8; BK 8
