MURDER TRIAL BEGINS

Robert John Barthmaier, wearing a cross bracelet, listens in court Monday as jury selection begins in his trial on charges of first-degree murder in the beating death of a Turkish exchange student. Barthmaier faces the death penalty if he is convicted in the murder of 17-year-old Mehmet Bahar, who was killed after a traffic altercation. Joseph Paul Wagner, also charged in the attack, is scheduled for trial later this month. Attorneys hope to give their opening statements in Barthmaier's case today.
