The East Lake Community Council reinstated founding President Mary Anne Schmidt on Tuesday night, but left two other board positions unfilled. Schmidt quit the position three months ago citing personal problems and was succeeded by then-Vice President Ron Grant. But recent family responsibilities left Grant little time for the civic group. And because Schmidt's life has settled down, she agreed to step back into her old job. "I really loved doing this. I never wanted to give it up," Schmidt said at the meeting. Although she is working full time, she said, "I'm going to give it every spare minute I have." Although Vice President Larry Greely and Treasurer Marianne Wayne also resigned recently, their positions remain unfilled. The group appointed two new people to the council's governing board: Dexter and Rose Studwell. They will help to choose new officers.
County refuses to close road
PALM HARBOR _ More than 100 residents along Winding Willow Drive in Palm Harbor say they want their road closed to stop speeders from using it as a cut-through from Tampa Road to Curlew Road. But county commissioners on Tuesday said solving those residents' problems would just shift it to their neighbors. The residents, who presented a petition with 121 signatures, said they'd like to see the road blocked just south of Brandywine Drive. Doing that would send traffic through another nearby subdivision, County Administrator Fred Marquis said. Commissioners agreed. "We're all somewhat sympathetic," Commissioner Steve Seibert said. "But it just wasn't a good idea."
