Former Countryside player Crystal Ashley, a 5-foot-10 junior center for the University of Tampa, was named Sunshine State Conference player of the year Wednesday. Ashley, from Safety Harbor, averaged 15.2 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, leading the Spartans (21-5) to their first SSC regular-season title, and a school-record number of victories as well as a current nine-game wining streak.
The Clearwater Christian College men's basketball team has made it to the national tourney for the third time in three years.
The Cougars, playing in Division II of the National Christian College Athletic Association, will face Northland (Wis.) Baptist Collge at 3 p.m. today. The eight-team tournament is at Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Mo.
Clearwater Christian is 15-11 and seeded fourth.
Junior infielder Lindsay Penrose, one of only two returning players to the Lakewood softball team, injured her right throwing hand when she slipped in the school parking lot before practice Wednesday. The extent of the injury is still being determined.
