HERNANDO CHRISTIAN SPELLING CHAMPS: Hernando Christian Academy students Ricky Blundell, David Garcia, Christy Ebert, Chris Whitten, Kimberly Clark, Emily Dombrowki, Geoff Rutzen and Michael Cacioppo will represent HCA in a district-wide spelling bee for Christian schools. The spelling bee is today at Skycrest Christian School in Clearwater. The winners will receive trophies and progress to the regional competition. For information call 796-0616.

DISCIPLINE TASK FORCE: The Hernando County Schools Discipline Task Force will meet at 7 tonight in the School Board room, 919 N Broad St. in Brooksville. The task force subcommittees will report on their findings, and a discussion on the School Board presentation will be held. The task force formed last summer to review the current discipline policy in the school district. The task force will make a recommendation to the board this spring. ESSAY CONTEST: The Withlacoochee Rockhound Club will sponsor essay contests for Hernando County and Pasco County public school students. Fourth- and fifth-grade pupils will submit hand-written essays of 150 words on "What Rocks Mean to Me." Pupils in grades six through eight will submit 250-word, hand-written essays of "Rockhounding As a Hobby." "Geology or Earth Science as a Career" will be the subject for high school students. Their essays must be 600-word, typewritten submissions. Entries must be submitted to school counselors by March 15. All students will receive a certificate of merit for their participation. Two winners in each level will be chosen and each will receive a cash award: fourth- and fifth-graders, $50; sixth- through eighth-graders, $75; and ninth- through 12th-graders, $100. The club also will continue to award two $1,000 scholarships to college students studying for a career in geology or earth science.
