A New Port Richey man was pulled from Tampa Bay on Wednesday after he jumped off the Bayside Bridge in an apparent suicide attempt. The 26-year-old man was being treated for minor injuries at Clearwater Community Hospital.
Pinellas County sheriff's spokeswoman Marianne Pasha said the man parked his car in the emergency lane of the southbound span just south of the hump about 2 p.m. He walked to the bridge railing and jumped off the low trestle portion of the bridge.
Witnesses saw him clinging to bridge pilings and lowered a rope to him. Safety Harbor firefighters rescued him by boat. Pasha said the man told deputies that he was depressed and wanted to die, but gave no reason. It was the first suicide attempt on the bridge since it opened in May.
