A 26-year-old New Port Richey man was rescued from Tampa Bay on Wednesday after leaping from the Bayside Bridge, Pinellas County sheriff's deputies said. The man was taken to Clearwater Community Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released. He had parked his car in the southbound emergency lane, and a witness saw him jump off the bridge about 2 p.m. Sheriff's spokeswoman Marianne Pasha said the witness and another person tied together a rope and jumper cables to hold onto the man, who was clinging to a piling in the swift currents. Rescue squads plucked the man out of the water and took him to Clearwater Community. The man, whose identity is being withheld to protect his privacy, told deputies that he has been depressed recently.
