Varn baseball tourney openers delayed until today by wet fields

First-round games in the second annual Tom Varn Invitational baseball tournament, originally scheduled for Wednesday, were postponed until today due to wet grounds at Hernando High's Emerson Field.

A revised schedule has Citrus playing South Sumter at 5 p.m. and host Hernando playing Central at 8.

Friday's schedule and Saturday's schedule remain the same (please see For the Record).

All-SAC: Springstead High's Jenny O'Sullivan was named co-player of the year along with Jaime Parr of Land O'Lakes on the recently released All-Sunshine Athletic Conference soccer team.

Two Springstead High coaches, Bob Levija (wrestling) and John Bifulco (girls soccer), earned coach-of-the-year honors in their respective sports.

The conference includes Springstead and each of the seven Pasco County public high schools. (For complete teams, see For the Record.)

Hernando Heat soccer: The Hernando Heat men's soccer team lost 5-2 Sunday to Blackwatch, an upper-division opponent, in the second round of the Florida Suncoast Soccer League playoffs.

Heat goals were scored by Rafael Rodriguez, who has a team-high 27, and Tom Brooks. The Heat (13-4-1) opens Division IV Cup play later this month, meeting Polonez Sarasota in an opening-round match. The Heat beat Polonez twice in the regular season.
