Air Force Airman William R. Spurgeon IV has graduated from the financial services specialist course at Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, Texas. Students were taught principles and procedures for preparing input and operating equipment in a mechanized disbursement system. Fund accounting, military pay and travel payments were emphasized. Spurgeon is the son of Mary F. Baker of Tampa and a 1993 graduate of Chamberlain High School.
Air Force Airman Betty D. Ewell has graduated from the surgical service specialist course at Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Fall, Texas. Students were taught operating room basic knowledge, processing sterile supplies and equipment and providing nursing care for patients in preparation for surgery. Ewell is the daughter of Josh and Susie Huskey of Tampa.
Army Sgt. Lawrence J. Ruski Jr. has been decorated with the Army Achievement Medal which is awarded to soldiers for meritorious service, acts of courage, or other outstanding accomplishments. Ruski, a bridge crewmember, is the son of Pat A. and Lawrence Ruski of Tampa.
Air Force Airman Alec S. Eigenberger has graduated from Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization and customs and received special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Eigenberger is the son of Sandra K. Britten of Tampa.
Marine Cadet Matthew Paul Smith was recently promoted to Corporal at Marine Military Academy, Harlington, Texas. The academy is an independent, college prepatory school and awards promotions in recogniton of combined performance in academics, military leadership and athletics. Smith, a sophomore, is the son of Susan W. Smith of Tampa.
Navy Seaman Recruit Pablo Cases recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Orlando. During the cycle, he was taught general military subjects designed to prepare him for further academic and on-the-job training in one of the Navy's 85 occupational fields. Studies include seamanship, close-order drill, naval history and first aid. Cases is the son of Edwin and Carmen A. Cases of Tampa.
Army Pvt. Benjamin J. Baldwin has completed basic training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During the training, he received military instruction in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military jusitice, first aid and Army history and traditions. Baldwin is the son of Ned H. and Janet K. Baldwin of Tampa.

During the training, he was taught the basics of battlefield survival and introduced to typical military daily routine and personal and professional standards. All recruits participate in an active physical conditioning program and gain proficiency in a variety of military skills including first aid, rifle marksmanship and close-order drill. Converse is the son of Virginia L. Converse of Tampa and G. Converse Jr. of Lutz.
