Whalers 2, Panthers 1: The Whalers, who visit Tampa Bay tonight, snapped a four-game losing streak with goals from Todd Harkins _ 56 seconds into the game _ and Geoff Sanderson. Host Florida has lost a season-high five consecutive games and eight of its past nine. The Panthers have not scored more than three goals in any of their past 10 games. Rookie Rod Niedermayer got his first goal in 14 games for the Panthers. Florida had several good chances to tie the score afterward, but goalie Sean Burke came up with several big saves. Florida outshot the Whalers 19-10 in the third period. Harkins, who was obtained in a trade from Calgary Jan. 24, got his first point in a Hartford uniform.

Rangers: Left wing Adam Graves, the team's goal leader, has signed a new contract. Terms were not revealed. The 25-year-old Graves is in his third season with the Rangers and sixth in the NHL.
Gulls: Defenseman Peter Laviolette, captain of the 1994 U.S. Olympic team, signed with San Diego for the rest of the season. Laviolette, 29, will be in uniform for Sunday's home game against Cincinnati.
