Former Boca Ciega football player John Keough died early Saturday from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, authorities said.
Keough, who graduated from Boca Ciega in 1991, was a special-teams player for Eastern Kentucky's football team.
Keough, who was in his early 20s, died in his dormitory school officials said.
"John was a fine young man, and everybody was completely shocked that this happened," said Roy Kidd, Eastern Kentucky's coach and athletic director. "He was a good student. He was doing real well academically."
The death is being investigated by Madison County Coroner Embry Curry, the school's public safety division, and the Kentucky State Police.
Keough made the All-City-Academic football team and the Times second-team All-Pinellas County team as a defensive lineman.
