First women for combat ship

60 women to be assigned to "Eisenhower'

The Navy says it will assign women to a combat ship for the first time today. More than 60 women will be assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Eisenhower. The Navy said 500 female officers and sailors eventually would be assigned to the carrier. Women have served on noncombat ships since 1978 and have been assigned to combat air squadrons since April 1993.
