SUN CITY CENTER
Bunka Art Club
Four members of the Sun City Center Bunka Art Club were awarded Japanese Teaching Certificates from the All Japan Embroidery Association by completing all of the association's requirements. The members are Mary Gubitose, Anita Tardif, Rita Mosko and Barbara Nicoll. All of the required pictures are of a complex nature of various subjects and stitching techniques. The teachers have either completed or are near completion of an original picture that is required for the next level of certification. The teachers were trained by Dee Sims who was taught by Eiko McKissick, who up until a few years ago was the only master teacher in the United States. Mrs. Sims, holder of two Japanese Association certificates, has had individual shows in Charleston, S.C., Houston and Tampa. She introduced the art form to Sun City Center in 1982. Bunka is a Japanese embroidery and is recognized by the National Art Gallery in Washington, D.C., as art, not needlework. It is also called "painting with threads." The Sun City Center Bunka Art Club meets from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. All Sun City Center Community Association members are invited to join.
