All-Star Academic Team selected

Six students and two advisers have been selected to represent Pinellas County schools in the state Academic Team competitions April 28-30 at Walt Disney World in Orlando.

Students are nominated for the All-Star team by Academic Team coaches and chosen by consensus based on their performances in Academic Team competitions throughout the school year.

Pinellas County's 1994 All-Star Academic Team members and their high schools are Spencer Hall and Jeffrey Olsen, East Lake; Dimetra Giannakoulias, Clearwater; Daniel Hennessy, Tarpon Springs; Jimmy Kang, St. Petersburg; and Mary Ann Kirkconnell, Northeast. Advisers are John Burton of St. Petersburg High School and Bob Eunson of East Lake High School.

The East Lake High School team, with adviser Eunson and team members Hall, Olsen, Shannon Bonafede, Channon Kelly, Ketan Kulkarni and Mike Stanton, won the Pinellas County schools' academic team tournament Feb. 15.

Tarpon Springs High School's team of Hennessy, Gregory Hillson, Rebecca Sims, A.J. Tobey, Angel Torres and Nick Zissimapulos placed second. Tarpon Springs' adviser was Joan Becker.

Third place went to Northeast High School's team of Kirkconnell, Javier Caraccioli, Julie Carr, David Lynch, Phu Nguyen and Grady Snipes. Diana Hensley and Tonya Strubbe were team advisers.

The Pinellas County Education Foundation provided scholarship money for members of the top three county teams. Each member of the first-place team received a $400 scholarship. Second-place team members received $250 scholarships, and third-place team members received $150 scholarships.
