Some of the 155 entries in the contest to design a new Hillsborough County seal are promising. Others are not.
"This one has a lot of historical significance," said contest judge Barbara Koenig, pointing to a pencil drawing of a castle complete with turrets. "Maybe to Denmark."
The contest is the result of last year's decision by the County Commission to remove the Confederate battle flag from the seal.
Six judges spent Monday afternoon evaluating the entries. Their job is to narrow the field to one selection from each of four artists categories: adult, high school, junior high and elementary school.
The entries are being judged on historical symbolism, graphic design and community representation.
The judges will recommend the best of the lot to the Hillsborough County Historical Commission, which will make a recommendation. County commissioners will make the final pick in April.
