St. Petersburg High School placed second and Lakewood High School placed third in the Tampa Bay Regional Science Bowl Feb. 26 at the University of South Florida campus in St. Petersburg.
Math and science teams from 23 high schools in Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee and Pasco counties participated in the event. Students were asked questions related to biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, computer science, mathematics and earth science.
Hillsborough High School had the winning team. Team members will receive a trip to Washington, D.C., on April 22 to compete in the fourth annual National Science Bowl. The school will receive $1,000 for its math and science program and each team member will receive a $500 savings bond.
St. Petersburg High School team members Jeremy Feld, Sam Wolfson, Jimmy Kang and Jonathan Wrubel will receive $250 savings bonds and the school will receive $500. St. Petersburg High School's coach is Yvonne Waters.
Lakewood High School team members Jon Young, Duc Luu, Curtis Crispin, J. Austin Hijar and Ron Albright will receive $100 savings bonds and the school will receive $250. Lakewood's coach is Peter Oberg.
Martin-Marietta Specialty Components sponsored the regional contest.
